Boston College Recreation Center - Boston, MA
The Connell Recreation Center is a unique facility both rooted in the tradition of Boston College’s collegiate gothic architecture and infused with leading-edge 21st century programming space and amenities. Standing four stories tall, the 244,000 sf center is a beacon for the campus that redefines the future of fitness, recreation and wellness. A beacon and inspiring addition to the Boston College campus, the Connell Center houses a fitness center, rock-climbing wall, jogging track, aquatics center, basketball courts, indoor tennis, an elevated jogging track (perfect for Boston Marathon training) mind-body studio, group exercise rooms and fitness neighborhoods located throughout the facility. The site provided many technical challenges with a Massachusetts Water Resources Authority easement to the west, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation property to the east and south, Walsh Hall to the North, a high water table below and high-rise limitations above. The building is also a technical marvel with pressure injected footings, mat slabs, structural precast concrete, mechanical systems moving large quantities of air and the integration of large programmatic spaces on a compact site.
